Some days

28 Aug

Some days, when I am bored bored, I do boring things, such as blogging

Some days, when it is boring boring, and I am bored, it rains from heaven

and when it rains from heaven, and I am bored, and I start blogging

and when I blog, for some reason, it starts raining, and I know it’s boring

but what can I say? the heaven is raining from top, and I am looking it up…

the heaven is raining, and i am boring, and who’s tearing?

.

.

.

(i am boring…am I not?)

The Ramen Girl

26 Aug

Has anyone seen this movie? I kind of like her job…the first one…yeah, the one who “proof-read” the spelling of “TOILET.”

YouTube link The trailer is slow and not well cut, though.

Ubuntu Printers Missing/Disappeared…and Fixed, =.=

04 Aug

I use Ubuntu 9.04 and what’s the name of it? Jaunty something. Well, sometimes it’s really not that jaunty. My printers all disappeared this afternoon when I tried to print a document. I have an USB-connected LaserJet 1020 and couple of network printers. They worked fine before today and suddenly just puffed.

Thanks to the good people in Google (for the search engine) and in the Ubuntu community (who post tirelessly solutions for different kinds of odd problems), I was able to fix it.

How?
1. sudo apt-get install menu
2. su-to-root -X -c /usr/sbin/wifi-radar

I found this solution from the Ubuntu Forums. My lovely printers are all back now.

Now, could someone tell me what the h**k does my printers have to do with wifi radar?

Xmarks is blocked by Anchiva

04 Aug

Xmarks is a bookmark synchronization service and it was the best I could find at the time when I desperately needed a bookmark management/sync software. I used it and have been very happy with it. I even have my passwords stored and synced.

If you haven’t used Xmarks (formerly Foxmarks as a Firefox add-on), I strongly suggest you to do so out of personal experience. Huh? Does it with other browsers like Internet Explorer? …Firefox isn’t the only browser?

Unfortunately, Xmarks is being blocked by all sorts of firewalls and proxys. I hate to see that happening and Xmarks.com seems not able to take care of it. Maybe I should offer a server to offer such service so to route around the Xmarks server. The software has the capacity to do so. Xmarks is a great service and I let Xmarks handle my life. Now I would sacrifice my life (no, I won’t) to keep it up and running.

What a Job (as a college teacher)!

04 Aug

I came to this job thinking of teaching and completing some research topics I had in mind. Well, I didn’t know that the hardest part of my job would be to convincing the students (even graduate students) that I am here to help them and that they have to stick with some simple principles like doing their assignments.

Since when has teaching become baby-sitting? That’s really not what I was here for. I know no one is perfect but, hey, give me a break! Don’t you give me a paper at 10:00 PM of the day before a conference due day and tell me you going out tomorrow. What does that mean? I am an unpaid proofreader? What I have been doing is to cultivate and help students with their professional development. Ah!…so what students want is fun, and more fun? What’s the point of taking a degree program, then? Especially a graduate one?

I had several close teachers with different styles. Looks my advising style needs some serious work.
