Ubuntu 9.10 Dual Monitor is Working!!

26 Oct

*Turn off your Visual Effects and the dual/extending monitor works!!

Well this is probably nothing much for most people. It is, to me, that the dual monitor thingy is finally working. The thing is, I am using two monitors here and Ubuntu 9.10 RC’s did not support them to work side by side. Now it is and I can type on one screen a search on the other. Guess what? :D Happy as a clam!!

[I went to my office and did the same thing on my TravelMate 3000 (I have a 3010 at home) and it didn't work. Turned out that it worked right after I changed the Visual Effects to None. So, maybe it's been working? Stupid me/Ubuntu!]

Talking about bad ideas…(Ubuntu Software Center not so Karmic)

20 Oct

Geez! This is out of my humble expectations: who in the hell came out of the idea of Ubuntu Software Center”? (I say, Shuttlworth should hire me.)

Well, it might be a commercial trick to show people how easy it is to use Ubuntu, but wait, now about the ratings? Ratings are important information when it comes to choose an application over other 300 good ones and bad ones. Also, a well-managed rating system can be a great place for community building and will certainly attract more users. Now this Software Center is making it more difficult to pick software.

Also, the interface is LOUSY. What do you know someone would reduce the left menu to 2 items (why even there, right) and make the software categories in icons (ya, like anyone would know how all the 2174 packages available are categorized). Why not just put them into the categories in the left menu like the old time? Changes are not always better, you know? And someone made a perfect demonstration here.

There’s something in this world called interface. Hello?

(BTW, what is “Free Software”? Don’t you think it’s essential to let people know with ease how “free” the software they are viewing is? Where’s the differentiation of Canonical/community/…? This is where the spirit of Ubuntu/Linux is expressed: in the details…are you with me?)

So fast…I can’t even see it clearly…(upgrading Ubuntu 9.10 server)

19 Oct

I changed the sources.list of the newly installed Ubuntu 9.04 test box and did an update. Good, pretty fast. And I thought, hey, why not an upgrade?

Okay, this is what I got: 2524KB/s.

You don’t get any faster than this too much. This is a 2~3 times top in your lifetime, alright? So I am (b)logging it hereĀ  for the record’s sake.

(Ah, I am a simple man! This makes me happy already. ^^)

Ubuntu 9.10 (Alpha 6), an OS to fall in love with…

18 Oct

:”>

I’ve never thought I would say something like the title, but I was installing the Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 6 daily (yesterday’s) build, and it is sooooooooo KUUL!!

The installation sequence windows are smooth and well layouted and coloured. The splashes…wow!! Talking about rocks!! The small Ubuntu white logo on a pure dark screen is awesome! And the Usplash spotlighting is like no one! You know what? I didn’t even like the Mac stuff. I have to say, this time, I am seriously impressed.

Thank you Ubuntu guys, for the great OS we are enjoying. Beware, my friend Bill Gates…(oh, he kinda retired already), Ubuntu 910 is coming, don’t let it become your 911. You guys need to work harder doing your job from now on because if you don’t, we (yep, this time, we) will take yours.

Ubuntu 9.10 makes my computer sound karmic (partially, and finally)

04 Oct

I don’t know if I am the only one who has noticed (complained) but the sound of TravelMate 3010 has been lost since I upgraded to 9.10. I had to use command shell to “sudo alsa – reload” and then restart Firefox so I can play Bejeweled with dignity (read “sound” here). After I don’t know how long, finally I noticed today (after who knows how many hundreds of updates installed), the sound stays now. I still have to click on the greyed out sound icon in the system area to drag the sound level for audio to appear but I don’t have to restart Firefox now. The audio is there!

I am glad they fixed this problem (partially) and I am playing Bejeweled happily (also partially).
