So, what happened to Google Lively?

31 Jan

Okay I am a little left behind here, but I ran into some old pages about Google Lively and I was like: huh? There’s something about Google I don’t know?

Ya, admit it, there are things that happen so fast and, “before you know it”, it’s gone. From July 2008 to end of 2008? and the best you could do with it is to leave a website there? (www.lively.com)

Not lively anymore, obviously.

*well, let me confess. I had a Google Lively account. I just wasn’t sober enough to recall it. I don’t even feel reminiscent when I saw “Google Lively” this time. Call me old but that’s how Google Lively died.

Organizing Gmail Contacts (this is a complaint)

06 Jan

If my friends in Google ever does anything stupid, the Gmail Contacts is one of them. The reason? if you have more than 20 contacts, try organize them into groups and you’ll see what I mean.

And the reason? Well, tell you what, I think Gmail engineers are not email users. They probably receive 5 emails everyday or having their secretive G-SOMETHING gadgets for their communication instead of emails.

Is this going to get better? I doubt. I mean, why bother, right? It took Gmail only 2 years to implement a Delete button and they still don’t let you do sorting on the messages.

Hmm…I smell an opportunity here…I should start Stupidoo and to offer competitive services against Google. So when Google become Microsoft, I’ll be the new Google.

Chroming…: CDEF HIJK (…skipping the capital G)

14 Dec

DO NOT let G think for you. ~polochen~

If I could live one day without Google, I would. I mean, I just installed Google Browser for my Ubuntu, and I couldn’t help to wonder: how much should I keep this Googling thingy on? I trust them with all my information, my files, my emails (which pretty much means my life), and now my browser? Am I too loyal to one company? A company that swears to do no evil but negotiate with the Chinese government on censorship?

Ya, it is a little faster (Firefox is a crime in speed) and I hope it will keep my Acer TravelMate a little cooler before I replace it. Someday, maybe just like the sentiment against Microsoft would take a turn to Google when it grows bigger and bigger…ya, they are going to make a Google phone as they said not to. Oh well, I am living with the capital G for now but, hey, who knows, someday I might just wake up and embrace my friend Bill (Gates) again…what? He’s out already? Darn…

—————————————-update—————————————–

I have a proud collection of bookmarks and in Chrome they call it “Other Bookmarks”. I used to put them on the left and Chrome insists I should access it from the right. Some guy says it’s easer from right because of mousing…I just have to say people are not of equal intelligence. Oh well, who am I to judge, right?

One other thing, Google has a nice feature for they search engine to configure the Options for the results of your search. Under the time, however, I couldn’t help to find it jumps from week to year…what a gap for a time option. I’d like to have 6 months if possible. …oh, Google thinks for you, so just get used to it. After all, it’s just like the “Other Bookmarks”, right? [Since when do you let anyone tell you what's others and what's not? Google engineers are just too smart and confident, I guess.]

Google Chrome OS is coming…

16 Jul

Again, I am not so positive about this move. The reason? Look at the Gmail interface!! Can’t make anything worse than that and still have millions (huh? billions?) using it.
Anyway, good luck to Google Chrome OS. I’ll try it out and let’s hope they do a good job on it.

Oh, BTW, I would think Facebook would make a great OS if they keep their pace.

Gmail needs a message viewing pane

06 Jun

I guess no one except those geniuses in Google knows why Gmail does not have viewing pane. If I could, I would as them: what’s wrong with a viewing pane? Seriously, Gmail needs a huge massage on it’s face.

How to uninstall “Chrome for Linux” in Unbuntu Jaunty?

06 Jun

I was doing my usual news reading (the ever boring and couldn’t-top biased Unted News www.udn.com which I read daily because other press have worse writing). A title caught me saying that Google has a unstable test version of Chrome for Linux released. Well, I thought it’s about the time. Since I got nothing better to do, why don’t I get a Chrome for Linux. It seems though I was not able to find it and finally I ended up with Chromium. No thanks to the no-brain news reporters in Taiwan.

So I downloaded the newest version of Chromium and it is, as expected, quite crapy. The display of webpages is a mess so I can’t wait to uninstall it…but how? After some searches I came to Synaptic Package Manager and there’s a nice little green box there for me to click on to uninstall. Nice and easy. Chiao, “Chrome for Linux”! Thank you for being smart enough to register in Synaptic Package Manager.

Is there an “Anti-Google” campagn? Let me google it to find out…

03 Jun

So it was announced as the 2nd day keynote of Google I/O conference that Google is going to do this Google Wave thing and it’s going to affect every aspect of my life (and yours) after Gmail.

That Vick guy said it’s a surprise, and I can’t say it is not. I ended up watching more than 10 minutes of the one hour and 20 minutes presentation. Quite a show, I’ll say, and I’ll find time to finish watching it.

It looks really is a cool communication & collaboration tool. My office can have use of this one. I guess the unified communication guys in Microsoft are hating themselves for not having such publicity stunt. I guess the integration of messages of all kinds and most importantly, files, would be in Wave.

…okay, since you asked, my comments are here:
1. Told you, Gmail interface is lousy. Look at this Outlook-mocking three-pane interface and tell me I was right, okay?
2. I was and am right.
3. OpenSourced? Good.

PS. I turned Gmail yesterday and I still don’t like it. I miss Outlook and Windows Live Mail interface. I don’t like the fact that Microsoft is having such a huge OS market share and I don’t feel comfortable at all to hand myself to Google either. I want to believe that the capital G in Google stands for Good but — hey, they Google guys wear ugly T-shirts! (I just don’t like the feeling that someone is too much into my life and that I am not in control at least to a certain degree…am I alone here?)

Google Tasks is finally in town!

31 May

The long over-due Google Tasks is here…and I missed it again… :-(

It’s launched on May 13, 2009 as the link says.

This is a great (and slow) step for Google Calendar…WHAT took you so long?

——————————

I took a look at it and I couldn’t stop wondering: this is what we waited for years for? It looks like a five-minute thingy…
