A Great Free Website Monitoring Service

03 Jan

I used hyperspin.com to monitor my sites and it was great with good features (except not so great that I would pay out of my pocket to them to use it). So what happened is that after the trial period they test my one site one time every hour. This is interesting. I think I have better luck knowing if my sites are down with my iPhone. Of course I feel a little uneasy without knowing if my sites are down. But, hey, there must be something free out there, right?

Well, if you are like me, then our prayers have been answered. I ran into this http://wasitup.com. It is cool and all. Very simplistic and neat. They (he, it seems to be, looks like a geek’s nice work as his past time) test you sites every 5 minutes. I just started using it so I am around the first couple of thousand users there.

It’s cool for several reasons:

  1. It’s free.
  2. It (as in contrary to my iPhone) gives what I wanted.
  3. It’s free.
  4. The website interface is totally kewl!!!
  5. The management is … how can I say, he not only not giving you a management portal, you don’t even get an account. What he does is: you send in emails when you need to know how many sites you are monitoring. Geez, I’d call that guy a smarty….!!! (Seriously, what a brilliant idea, right?)

(Again, don’t forget to use it to feel the coolness of this guy’s management procedure and interface design ideas.)

This is all so wrong…

28 Dec

Okay, it goes like this: Let’s admit it, there’s no free lunch and everything you get has a cost involved. For most of us, time is our most spendable cost (which I thought I had plenty).

I”ve just (ya, go figure, after those years) come to an agreement with myself that somehow certain things have gone “wrong” with me. I have this obsessed framework of mind to build teams. This has cost me dearly (time-wise), I found; and has resulted no beneficiaries.

Now it’s clear to me.

^^ peace…

Why do people (I, or others) get their Ph.D. degrees?

19 Dec
  • Well, first of all, and all the time, it’s nice to be call a “doctor”.
  • Secondly, you get to do whatever you want to do and no one (except those lousy “docotors”) would ever question you.
  • Thirdly, you get to “doctor” others (not physically) rather than being “doctored” on.
  • So, if you may, go get your own doctor. It would only cost you 4 to 7 years and you get to be … well, you’ll be you. (But you need a doctoral degree to be yourself? Nahh…don’t be ridiculous.)

=——————————————-=

Q: So, what’s the point? I will be me when I get doctored? I am me now already.
A: There’s no point here. Should I make a point? I am a doctor and what I say is point. No need to make them.

(BTW, I am glad I did it and sorry for those who couldn’t take up the challenge and especially those who couldn’t get through it.)

Chroming…: CDEF HIJK (…skipping the capital G)

14 Dec

DO NOT let G think for you. ~polochen~

If I could live one day without Google, I would. I mean, I just installed Google Browser for my Ubuntu, and I couldn’t help to wonder: how much should I keep this Googling thingy on? I trust them with all my information, my files, my emails (which pretty much means my life), and now my browser? Am I too loyal to one company? A company that swears to do no evil but negotiate with the Chinese government on censorship?

Ya, it is a little faster (Firefox is a crime in speed) and I hope it will keep my Acer TravelMate a little cooler before I replace it. Someday, maybe just like the sentiment against Microsoft would take a turn to Google when it grows bigger and bigger…ya, they are going to make a Google phone as they said not to. Oh well, I am living with the capital G for now but, hey, who knows, someday I might just wake up and embrace my friend Bill (Gates) again…what? He’s out already? Darn…

—————————————-update—————————————–

I have a proud collection of bookmarks and in Chrome they call it “Other Bookmarks”. I used to put them on the left and Chrome insists I should access it from the right. Some guy says it’s easer from right because of mousing…I just have to say people are not of equal intelligence. Oh well, who am I to judge, right?

One other thing, Google has a nice feature for they search engine to configure the Options for the results of your search. Under the time, however, I couldn’t help to find it jumps from week to year…what a gap for a time option. I’d like to have 6 months if possible. …oh, Google thinks for you, so just get used to it. After all, it’s just like the “Other Bookmarks”, right? [Since when do you let anyone tell you what's others and what's not? Google engineers are just too smart and confident, I guess.]

Ubuntu/Firefox Kills

10 Dec

You know, Firefox can be buggy (well, one huge bug is enough) sometimes. And I am not kidding. FF hangs on me all the time (OO Impress hangs on me too, it just comes back all the time after it wakes up).

Finally, someone has to kill himself to wake the whole FF community up. My friend (?) Phil described in a forum discussion that he bit a bullet because of this FF hang problem. I have to say that I am with him although I haven’t bitten a bullet (and therefore available here blogging). This problem is major and some describe that “As its now official that Firefox has more bugs than IE, Safari and Chrome combined.” So true, eh? They even invented a script for it. (Darn, I should have thought of writing it).

Anyway, some lovely friend of ours write a script to kill and restart FF (what a shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

…is it time to fix it up?

Giving up the GIMP is a sign of Ubuntu’s mainstream maturity…or is it?

03 Dec

Huh? This guy is not serious, …oh, he is?
Let’s see…”Giving up the GIMP is a sign of Ubuntu’s mainstream maturity“, and how would you explain it to a lay Ubuntu user like me?
The explaining itself would be a tough job. When I saw the title, I was like…this guy is as funny as me. But I was wrong. Man! He’s serious!

If you go read the article, you will see that it’s a group decision in a high profile Ubuntu meeting. Ya, just like the Software Center thingy, not all Ubuntu people are equally wise. Some of us have to be stupid so I can write about them on Stupidoo, you know.

So what’s wrong with GIMP? It’s big and complicated…eh…hello? My notebook computer is like almost 4 years old and you don’t hear me complaining. Why would you want to do that to right something that is not wrong? As the the author trying hard to explain about the process being open and all, I know that he doesn’t feel right either.

Anyway, let’s hope Ubuntu can keep good work with the semi-annual release. Marketing wise, this approach will push Windows aside in a couple of years if the Ubuntu guys make less mistakes like removing GIMP from the distro.
